After years of waiting, Lionsgate has finally slated Silent Night, Deadly Night 3-5 for a Blu-ray treatment, and the three-disc set via the Vestron Video Collector’s Series is now available for pre-order from Amazon (currently going for $23.99) and will ship by 13 December. Arguably, these are not great films, but they are definitely worth your time, dollars, and attention as they actually play a fascinating role in cinematic history. For instance, it was the crew of Silent Night, Deadly Night -- namely director Monte Hellman, executive producer Richard Gladstein, and producer Arthur Gorson, who would later collaborate with an upcoming screenwriter named Quentin Tarantino to make the now cult favorite Reservoir Dogs. Yes, Silent Night, Deadly Night 3 gave birth to both Tarantino's career and Reservoir Dogs.
All three films are examined in depth in my book and feature interviews with Arthur Gorson, Richard Gladsetien, and Brian Yuzna and include never before seen photos from the making of Silent Night, Deadly Night 5: The Toymaker. Cool, right? Although I spoke briefly with special effects legend Screaming Mad George about his role in making the toys in SNDN 5, I was unable to interview him properly for the book. Interestingly, Bill Mosely had refused to speak about his role as Ricky in SNDN 3 when I reached out to him, but it looks like he had a change of heart regarding the Blu-ray and offers some commentary, which is good. At any rate, I'm looking forward to seeing the still gallery, because behind-the-scenes photos for all three of these films were very hard to come by. In short, I'm jazzed about this release and highly recommend it to complete your collection!
Although Arthur Gorson, producer of SNDN 3 had hinted that he would try and bring me on to participate in a featurette on the disc, it was not to be (and somehow Gorson was also excluded from the disc features). Alas, we now know what each of the discs will feature:
